U-18 Ruggerites eye world series
Seven countries including the United States will vie for the top spot in Guyana next month, with only the winners to advance.
The other countries are Bahamas, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and host nation Guyana.
The team has been hard in training almost daily Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Queen’s Park Savannah under coach Sean O’Farrell and his assistant Maurice Valere.
Corporal Colin Peters is managing the team with high expectations of pulling off the top spot in the competition.
Meanwhile the Trinidad and Tobago women will attempt to defend their regional title when they contest the Caribbean Rugby 15s tourney at a date and venue to be announced later.
Last year the local women claimed the top spot in the region under coach Kitty Andrews, although the United States won the play-off.
This time Andrews has been taking the girls through a similarly rigorous training programme at the Hasely Crawford Stadium and the Savannah, with hopes of successfully defending their regional position.
Last year the local girls got the better of some of the region’s top teams, St Lucia, St Vincent, Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados, losing only to the powerful and more experienced US team. The men’s team will also contest the Nowira Senior 15s Championship in Barbados in November.
