Toussaint joins McLeod at Butler’s grave
The annual Labour Day celebrations kicked off yesterday with the laying of wreaths at Butler's grave in Fyzabad. The ceremonial event began with prayers from 7.30 am.
Wreaths were laid while the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) president general Errol McLeod placed a garland around the neck of Butler’s statue. McLeod vowed he would never give up the struggle for workers. Attending the ceremony was president of the Transport Workers Union Local 100 of New York City, Roger Toussaint, who earlier this year led a strike which shut down New York City’s mass transportation system. Toussaint spent five days in jail for leading an illegal strike.
He also laid a wreath and joined hands with McLeod, David Abdullah and Cuban Yenielys Regueiferos, who represented the Cuba Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (Caribbean Region).
OWTU’s special guest Toussaint arrived in Trinidad on Saturday. He was feature speaker at yesterday’s Labour Day rally at Avocat Junction, Fyzabad.
