Emile scores honeymoon victory

He last won the event three years ago and yesterday’s victory may well earn him a place on the Trinidad and Tobago team for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games. The evergreen Guy Costa was second yesterday while David Alves placed third and both are in contention for selection also on the national team.

Ronald Peters took just two laps to secure his third gold medal in the National Championships winning the Veterans 60 years and Over grind.

His only challenger was Heraldo Hawkins who rode the race of his life and finished second for the silver medal.

But in the Veterans 50 years and Over category it was Mike Chan, riding his first championship race who emerged the winner.

There was no catching Chan who was off to a flying start and never let up until the end.

Peter Hernandez finished second fending off a challenge from Mark Massiah who was third in the four-lap race.

Costa’s brother Kent gave his best performance to date by claiming the top spot among the Veterans 40 years and Over.

He too rode against a challenging field yesterday but proved his worth in the four-lap event.

Gregory Dandrade grabbed the runners-up spot while Courtney Mark was third.

The Juniors Category was dominated by Jovian Gomez contested over four-laps and finished ahead Bevan Luces who was second.

However among the Juveniles a new face in middle distance runner Garvin Nero earned himself the top prize.

Nero who recently set a number of records at the recent CARIFTA Games in Guadeloupe in April surprisingly pedalled to the winners’ row among the juveniles.

The race over two laps saw Gevan Samuel, the son of former national cyclist Gene “Geronimo” Samuel secure the runners-up position.

And Alexander Gibbon, the nephew of cycling icon Roger Gibbon finished third.
