Man shot dead in Cedros

Hours after receiving a trophy for winning a cricket match, Egan Mollineau, 31, was shot dead when he intervened in a fight outside a wedding farewell in Cedros yesterday morning.

People scampered to safety, but when the commotion was over, Mollineau’s body was found in a drain at Bois Bourgh Village. Police said his body bore a single gunshot wound between the eyes. Three persons including a Coast Guard officer were yesterday assisting police with their investigation. According to a report, Mollineau, also known as “The Pest,” was standing on the road opposite the farewell at 1.30 am, when he saw a man being beaten by a group of men.

Police said Mollineau attempted to assist the man but was shot between the eyes. At Mollineau’s Los Gallow Village home in Cedros yesterday, his parents — Roderick Beraza, 62 and Dolsie Mollineau — were being comforted by friends and relatives. Sitting in a hammock, Beraza told Newsday that his son was well loved in the community.

Beraza said he has not been told the circumstances surrounding his son’s death. Recalling the last moments he spent with his son, Beraza said Mollineau left the house to attend a prize-giving function to collect a trophy for winning a windball cricket match at 5 pm.

After the trophy presentation, Beraza said his son and other members of the Angels Cricket Club went to the wedding farewell.

Beraza received a telephone call at 1.30 am informing him that his son had been shot and was pronounced dead at the Point Fortin Area Hospital.

Beraza said Mollineau did not have children but had planned to marry his girlfriend in December. “I don’t know why someone would want to kill him but they say if you are loved by many you are hated by someone,” he said.

The funeral arrangements will be finalised today after an autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre. Homicide detectives are continuing investigations.
