Yuille-Williams still mum on Savannah

National Carnival Commission (NCC) acting CEO George Assam said the NCC was not informed that it will have to move from the Queen’s Park Savannah, so they could not make a decision on an interim venue for Carnival.

The Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (Udecott), which is charged with construction of the National Carnival and Entertainment Centre which wolud replace the Grand Stand, issued a release last week stating it is currently engaged in reviewing detailed engineering drawings and value engineering on the project.

However Udecott gave no indication as to when the reviewing of the drawings will be completed in order that they be taken to Cabinet for approval before commencement of the physical demolition of the Grand Stand and subsequent construction of the proposed facility.

Earlier this year Yuille-Williams hinted of an interim move of Carnival to the Hasely Crawford Stadium, but this has prompted major concern from several persons.

Oliver Camps, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) said, “This idea is madness as far as I’m concerned. The stadium was erected for football and athletics and it should be for just that. I like Carnival and fetes, but everything has its place.”

President of the National Amateur Athletic Association (NAAA) Ken Doldron said he didn’t have a problem with Carnival taking place at the Stadium, but emphasised that adequate protection must be put in place for the newly refurbished mundo track.
