Foreigners released from prison

The lawsuit came up for hearing on Monday before Justice Maureen Rajnauth - Lee in the San Fernando High Court. The Chinese nationals — Wu Wengie and Zheng Yanqiang — were arrested by immigration officers in San Fernando on July 7.

Both were taken to Golden Grove Prison, Arouca. Attorney Asaf Hosein filed the motion last week to have them released. The motion stated that Wu and Zheng’s purpose of being in the country, was to speak to potential investors willing to open a candy factory.

The motion stated the two Chinese nationals were guests of businessman Zheng Jin Sheng, of Moody Street, San Fernando.

The motion admitted that both Wu and Zheng, were scheduled to leave in February, but did not because they had not yet concluded business talks.

In the motion, businessman Jin Sheng pleaded with the court to have the Chief Immigration Officer and the Commissioner of Prisons, release Wu and Zheng, into his care. The motion were served on Friday last, on the State.

When hearing of the motion came up before Rajnauth-Lee on Monday, Hosein informed the court that the men had been released.

The judge granted leave to the attorney to withdraw the habeus corpus motion.
