Checking out calypso lyrics

The University of Louisville student is in Trinidad on a three-week stint with ten other students and two professors to help in their Pan African Studies.

For the last two months Martin has been studying calypso but did not hear or see any live performances.

She said she had only done research. It was therefore a pleasure for her to meet Singing Sandra at the Mas Camp Pub on Wednesday night.

Martin just walked up to Sandra and introduced herself and started talking. She said she knew about Singing Sandra from her professors who made mention of the calypsonian on several occasions.

Martin said she is studying the effects of calypso lyrics (social commentary) in relation to the communities. She compared calypso to Hip Hop saying, “In the beginning there was social commentary in Hip Hop but that has gone now and calypso is now one of the last music that gives you social commentary.”
