Murder at standpipe

Police sources told Newsday Hasley ‘‘Crow’’ Butcher was shot twice in the head and died on the spot; his blood staining the laundry he was washing at the pipe off Lower Cipriani Avenue in Morvant.

Up to late yesterday, no arrests were made in this murder nor has a motive been established.

Frightened relatives who would only speak to Newsday anonymously, said they were now fearing for their lives and also lamented that Butcher’s death has left his son without a father.

“How could they do that to an innocent man,” a relative asked.

According to police reports, at about 6.30 pm, Butcher was washing clothes at the standpipe when gunmen shot and killed him.

Soon after residents saw Butcher’s body near the standpipe and telephoned the police.

The corpse was later removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where an autopsy confirmed death was caused by gunshot wounds to the head.

Eyewitnesses told police that eight shots were fired.

The murder rate for the year now stands at 227.
