Bomb Squad sweep Mayaro cricket

Bomb Squad, double champions last year, made a clean sweep of the major competitions — league, knock-out and round-robin.

They also copped the major individual honours in the women’s division, with Natasha Stewart voted as “Most Valuable Player” (MVP) and star batsman Nicola Cabrera scoring the most runs in the league (163) as well as the highest individual score (76).

As league champions, Bomb Squad collected $5,000, 20 gold medals and the bpTT Challenge Trophy. For their knock-out triumph, they received $2,000 and a trophy.

Grand Lagoon United, runners-up last year, were crowned Men’s League champions, collecting $5,000, 20 gold medals and the bpTT Challenge Trophy.

Grand Lagoon’s Ronnie Bhagaloo was voted male MVP. Runners-up in the league were newcomers Trinrico Sports, who received $3,000, 20 silver medals and a trophy.

Ecclesville Youths overcame No Singles in the Men’s Knockout finals, winning $2,000 and a trophy.

Organised by the Mayaro/ Guayaguayare Unemployed Organisation and Concerned Citizens (MGUOCC), the 2006 tournament attracted 21 male and five female teams, with a total of 775 cricketers taking part in the three competitions.

The competition is in its fifth year.

MGUOCC President, Matthew Pierre, heaped praise on bpTT for their continuing sponsorship of the league, which, he said, has brought the Mayaro/ Guayaguayare community closer together.

“The night cricket has brought wholesome activity to the various communities. More and more people are getting involved, as players and spectators. It must be the biggest competition of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago,” noted Pierre.
