Powergen receives Penal report

In a statement yesterday, Powergen said the report from the investigative team determined that the accident was caused by the insertion of a metal tool into an energised 33kV feeder box. Powergen also said those working on the feeder box did more than was required for the operation.

The report also said Powergen’s systems of work and training programmes were “documented, appropriate and suitable for the power generation industry.” Powergen general manager Garth Chatoor said the company will move swiftly to implement the recommendations of the report to strengthen its work-flow processes, safety auditing and improve its inter-departmental communication.

He reaffirmed Powergen’s commitment to following the highest level of international standards “consistent with its previous record of exemplary safety performance.”

The investigating team comprised independent experts and officials from the Labour Ministry, Powergen, Oilfields Workers Trade Union and TTEC.
