Fisherman still fighting for his life

Mohammed’s wife Nalini, maintained her husband’s innocence and told Newsday that she was told by doctors that he was not going to recover.

“His head is still swollen and he is still unconscious,” she said. “His whole life is catching fish, and my husband was never involved in any drugs or anything bad,” she disclosed.

She stated that her husband was an innocent man who made a humble living by catching fish, and having part time employment at Fernandes Compound, in Laventille.

“The only thing I want, is for him to get better. If not for me, for his daughter,” she stated.

Mohammed is the father of a 13-month-old, girl, Selena. “She is now calling for her daddy,” Nalini said.

However, Nalini declined to have her photograph taken, and was reluctant to make any judgment concerning her husband’s assailant.

Family members filled the lobby at the ICU, hoping to see Mohammed for one last time.

Eyewitnesses claimed that Mohammed and others were fishing when an unmarked boat approached them.

The fishermen who believed the men were pirates broke anchor and attempted to move out of the area. The men then pulled up behind the fishing boat and tried to switch off the engine. When Mohammed intervened he was shot in the head and shoulders at point blank range.

The shooter identified himself as a Coast Guard officer. Officers of the Port-of-Spain CID are continuing investigations.
