Jewandai Mahadeo, 67, died of cancer at her Gurahoo Trace, Chase Village home on Sunday evening. Singh, who remembered his mother as a “strong” woman, declined to comment on the continuing bacchanalia within the Opposition party.

However, he said that the goings-on within the party continued to be a source of concern among party supporters.

As he stood watching the flames engulf the funeral pyre, Singh commented: “what is happening right now in the UNC, is similar to that of a wake.”

Also present at the cremation was Oropouche MP Dr Roodal Moonilal, who until recently was a member of the Winston Dookeran-led slate. Moonilal recently aligned himself with the Persad-Bissessar led faction of the party.
