Andrews helps Joe Public to 1-0 win
FORMER TRINIDAD and Tobago midfielder Lyndon “Chubby” Andrews netted a 69th minute winner as the “Eastern Lions” Joe Public edged North East Stars 1-0 in front of a large crowd at the Sangre Grande Recreation Ground yesterday.
The hosts dominated the first half of the T&T Pro League match, and saw a couple of chances hit the crossbar, but those errors will later return to haunt the “Stars” as Andrews got the decisive goal midway into the second half.
The “Eastern Lions” stayed top of the ten-team table with 41 points, while North East slipped to third with 38.
In between the two is CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh, who squeezed past second-from-bottom Starworld Strikers 1-0 in the second match of Saturday’s double-header at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima.
Midfielder Kerry Baptiste, who returned a day earlier with the national team following their friendly international against Japan, got the winner, from the penalty spot in the 81st minute.
In the earlier match at Arima, Defence Force eked a 2-1 win out of Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA.
Strongly-built striker Akudu Goodridge scored on the stroke of halftime while Ronald St Louis doubled the lead for the Army-Coast Guard combination in the 55th.
Ex-national midfielder Conrad Smith pulled one back for Caledonia in the 59th but the “Teteron Lads” held on for only their fifth triumph this season.
W Connection produced one of the season’s most lopsided results, annihilating United Petrotrin 7-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva on Saturday.
Prolific youth striker Matthew Bartholomew had a field day as he registered a hat-trick, in the 12th, 27th and 64th minutes. Brazilian-born left-back William Da Silva Oliveira (20th), St Kitts’ striker Gorge Isaac (32nd), midfielder Hughton Hector (79th) and forward Earl Jean (84th) also chipped in with one apiece for the “Savonetta boys.”
Tobago United’s embarrassing 2006 season got worse on Saturday night as they defaulted their encounter against Superstar Rangers, which was scheduled for the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet. The win-less Tobagonians surrendered the match 3-0 to the league’s debutants.
