Watching your speed

Launched in the first quarter of this year, the programme seeks to remind motorists to “Think!” before getting behind the wheel of a car and while driving on the nation’s roads. The pilot project involves the placement of three signs near schools located around the Queen’s Park Savannah, specifically Queen’s Royal College, Holy Name Convent and Belmont Junior Secondary School.

A fourth sign has also been placed at bpTT’s Queen’s Park Plaza headquarters, while the Ministry of Works and Transport will install a fifth sign at a location of its choice.

The road signs, which measure the speed of an approaching vehicle or the average of two or more cars, have been designated for 50 km/h zones. If motorists are travelling in excess of 50 kmph, the signs will flash a “SLOW NOW” message.

Studies carried out in various countries revealed that such signs are highly effective in encouraging motorists to curb their overall speeding.

The public is advised, however, that the road signs will not gather or distribute any personal information about automobiles or drivers.
