Yorke advises Aussies - sign big names

The 34-year-old Yorke was the league’s biggest signing at Sydney FC but left the club this week to take up a two-year contract at the English League Championship side Sunderland.

“To be truthful, yes, I do (think the A-League is in jeopardy),” Yorke said responding to a question on Channel Nine news.

“But I hope it survives. I hope they can bring in some more so-called ‘names’. It’s not good to see the chief executive (John O’Neill) resign and the major marquee player leaving the league in the space of one week.

“I think football in Australia will continue to progress on the international level but it’s important to keep it progressing in the A-League. The players deserve a lot of credit for what they’ve done. I hope people still support the A-League.”

Yorke created waves in the A-League in its inaugural season last year, scoring several goals and providing crucial leadership to help Sydney FC left the title. The former Manchester United striker, who captured the Treble in 1999 with Sir Alex Ferguson’s juggernaut, signed a ?200,000 deal this week with Sunderland.
