Gun waved at political meeting

Burey Ghany, 27, is charged with possession of a firearm and five rounds of ammunition and possession of a firearm and ammunition with the intent to cause bodily harm.

According to the evidence of an officer attached to the Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB), Ghany was seen with a firearm during a political meeting at Queen’s Park savannah, south, Port-of-Spain on December 18, 2001.

The officer said while on duty with a party of officers at the meeting, at which there were thousands of people in attendance, Ghany was seen with his right arm raised and a silver and black firearm in his hand. He said he heard several loud explosions and he saw people scampering.

The officer said he and another officer began walking toward the accused, who was still brandishing the weapon. When Ghany saw them approaching, he ran toward the Princes Building.

The witness said he and the other officer ran after the accused and caught up with him a short distance away.

When they searched Ghany, the officer said, they found the weapon and five rounds of ammunition in his pants crotch.

After being cautioned, Ghany replied: “Boss is a man give me that to hold.”

He was arrested and taken to the Besson Street Police Station.
