Tribute paid to Manswell
George De Peana, General Secretary of the Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL) made the point when he delivered the eulogy at the funeral service for Manswell, former president of the PSA.
Manswell died a week ago and was buried at the Lapeyrouse Cemetery following a service at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity to celebrate his life. Manswell was 80 when he died.
De Peana saw Manswell as one who fought doggedly for the rights of female public servants who when they became pregnant, had their status changed from permanent to temporary.
“Compulsory maternity leave, removed this injustice,” noted De Peana - “thanks to Manswell.”
According to De Peana, another outstanding achievement of Manswell was his involvement in the founding of the Caribbean Public Services’ Association (CPSA).
“You would agree with me that James was one of those who made things and some very important things happen,” said De Peana.
Hundreds of public servants attended Manswell’s funeral.
The Industrial Court was represented by not only its president, but several other members as well. Celebrants at the funeral service were former Dean of the Cathedral, Rev Knolly Clarke and Canon Francis Caesar.
