Cricket foundation strong

This is the opinion of Deryck Murray, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) as he addressed the 2007 presentation function of the Atlantic LNG Sponsored Primary Schools Cricket League at the Rudranath Capildeo Learning Resource Centre, McBean, Couva last Thursday.

The sponsors, over the last four years, have invested over $500,000 in the Primary Schools Cricket League.

And they are satisfied that they have been fully supporting the growth and development of the game at the primary school level in Trinidad and Tobago.

It is hoped that the effort would eventually blossom throughout the Caribbean, according to Heidi Bason, Team Leader of the Corporate Communications Team of Atlantic LNG. In his address, the former Test wicketkeeper Murray said that the primary school level is a crucial stage in identifying and nurturing promising cricket potential.

And he commended Atlantic LNG for their commitment in the promotion of the game in Trinidad and Tobago.

“It is a solid foundation on which to build the fortunes of cricket,” he added.

Murray noted that over 700 primary schools were involved in the competition during the year. “Most certainly that is an excellent base for the development of the game, and without which we will have no international cricket,” Murray said.

“We will see the emergence of West Indies stars.”

Murray recalled the names of teachers who helped him at the primary school level including Noel Samm and Carlton John and said that without a good start one cannot go forward.

He paid tribute to Atlantic LNG for their continued interest in the promotion of schools’ cricket and thanked all of those who were involved in ensuring that the competition was well organised.

“We hope that out of your effort we will be able to produce one or two West Indies cricketers,” Murray said.

Also addressing the function were Anthony Ramjit, president of the Primary Schools Cricket League; Henry Saunders, representing the Ministry of Education; and Heidi Bason of Atlantic LNG.
