Nelson nets in Lions’ FA win over NE Stars
In another quarter-final fixture at Marvin Lee, the Guyanese internationals Nigel Codrington, Dwight Peters and Charles Pollard combined for Caledonia AIA to hammer Coast Guard/Air Guard 4-0 in the other match of the double-header at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna.
Joe Public, who captured the Toyota Classic earlier this month on an injury time winner by Nelson over San Juan Jabloteh in the final, jumped ahead at the Marvin Lee Stadium with a 15th-minute goal by national midfielder Kerry Baptiste.
Joe Public appeared set to clinch the victory on that scoreline until the Nigerian Christian Okonkwu tied the scores for North East from the penalty spot in the 78th minute, setting up the dramatic finish with Nelson scoring.
Former Trinidad and Tobago international and Scottish League pro Lyndon Andrews sent a pass through to the Guyanese Gregory Richardson who entered a 50-50 play with the North East goalkeeper Curtis Granger.
The ball rebounded to Nelson, who placed a high, delicate shot over a cluster of opposing players for the winning goal.
In the earlier game, Codrington (53rd), Peters (65th) and Pollard (79th) got goals, and the St Lucian Sheldon Emmanuel netted from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time as Caledonia coasted to victory over Coast Guard/Air Guard.
In the other quarterfinal double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, United Petrotrin beat Defence Force 2-0 with strikes from Keon Daniel (80th) and Jody Allsop (84th), and San Juan Jabloteh ousted W Connection 1-0 courtesy of a 33rd-minute item from Antiguan forward Peter Byers.
