Forbes, Benny in Flow Ultimate Football finals

The boys competed in the Trinidad and Tobago leg of the competition last Saturday at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima. Unlike a regular day of football training, these boys were among 90 aspiring footballers looking to win the grand prize – a VIP trip to Old Trafford to see English Premier League club Manchester United play.

For the TT leg, coaches moved the youngsters through three skills: control, short passing and dribbling.

The skills were taken from the Manchester United Academy programme and local coaches evaluated and ranked each player. The lead coach was former England defender Terry Fenwick who works with Flow Sports and also owns the Football Factory coaching school.

Following the intense sessions, the boys participated in some fun games until the announcements were made. At the end, Forbes, a Queen’s Park player who competed in the 13-14 age group, and Benny, a member of the TT Under-17 team as well as local club St Ann’s Rangers, who was in the 16-yearold group, were the winners.

Cindy-Ann Gatt, Director of Marketing at Flow, said in her welcome remarks that the Ultimate Football Experience was an opportunity to improve skill and a step in measuring capabilities. But more important, she added, it was opportunity to begin the journey as a member of the national team or as an international star.

On May 7, Forbes and Benny will be facing young players from Grenada, St Vincent, Barbados, St Lucia, Dominica, Montserrat, Antigua/ Barbuda, St Kitts/Nevis, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Curacao.

Local triathlon gets coaching boost

Coaches from TT as well as other Caribbean nations – Grenada, Barbados, Jamaica, Cayman Islands — will participate in the camp, with facilitators provided by British Triathlon.

The trainers are Emma Brunning, Shaun Green and Scott Murray, all with strong swimming and cycling backgrounds.

The coaching camp entails theory and practice in all the elements of triathlon at the National Aquatic Centre, Couva.

According to TTT F secretary, Karen Araujo, the course addresses the holistic development of the athlete and is intended to give regional coaches the tools to improve the performances at youth and junior levels, with the hope of qualifying for future Pan Am, Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

Participation in triathlon at junior level is growing and the Federation intends to introduce the sport to the schools and build multi-sport teams.

TT Carifta coach expects improved showing

A TT team of 51 athletes and 13 officials will aim for a stronger performance this year. In 2016, TT finished fifth on the medal standings with 14 medals – three gold, two silver and nine bronze.

Jamaica topped the medal standings followed by Barbados, Bahamas and Grenada.

Carter was reluctant to make a prediction of how many medals TT might claim in Curacao but says the team is adopting the right attitude.

“I don’t predict medals, but certainly on this team we had more people doing the standard to achieve selection than we did last year. The focus and the passion on this team seems to be a lot different to the team that went to Carifta last year. I do expect better performances,” he said.

Over 40 athletes made the Carifta standard this year which is an increase from last year.

Carter is anticipating top performances from last year’s gold medallists Tyriq Horsford and Khalifa St Fort. Horsford won the boys Under-18 javelin, while St Fort won the girls Under-20 100-metre event.

The TT coach also expects strong efforts from Joshua St Clair (boys Under-20 400m/4x- 400m/4x100m) and Rea-Ann Serville (girls Under-18 400m/4x- 400m/4x100m).

Carter added the TT boys Under- 18 relay teams and the girls Under-18 sprinters are also expected to compete at a high level.

Carter said some of the athletes are focused and hungry for success after missing out on qualification last year.

“In the past it has been somewhat difficult at times (to keep them focused). For instance, Joshua St Clair missed the standard (last year) by one tenth of a second and he did not make the team.

“This year, they really came out focused on doing well, so we had a lot of athletes making the standard early in the year.” St Clair ran a time of 47.89 seconds in the boys Under-20 400m event at the Carifta trials last year, missing the Carifta qualification standard of 47.80. The TT team had their first meeting yesterday.

TT Golf Open tees off Thursday

But 2016 winner Sachin Kumar will not be defending his title due to academic commitments in the United States.

There will be five divisions (flights) at the four-day event – Championship, First Flight, Second Flight, Seniors and Super Seniors.

And there will be an added incentive as the top four finishers in the Championship Division will be eligible to compete at the Jamaica Classic in Montego Bay, Jamaica in June.
