Calypso and cricket inseparable

First and foremost though, author and freelance journalist Nasseer Khan told Newsday that the book is really “a youth literacy education initiative” that he undertook in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and sponsor NAGICO insurances.

“It is history though poetry and prose in music and song. It is literature.

It is history. It is culture.

Hopefully, students will benefit from it,” Khan said.

The book is easy to read, and to extract data, as it is broken down in categories featuring players, series, and even political commentaries.

Since its launch, copies of the 215-page book – which incidentally features 215 calypsoes – have been handed over to the Ministry of Education to be distributed to the libraries of every secondary school in the country.

Copies have also been given to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TT CB). Copies are also to be given to tertiary institutions including the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT ).

However, because of limited hard copies published, and because it may be used in schools at one point in time or the other, it is expected Khan said, that online copies will be available to students.

Education Minister Anthony Garcia has recommended the publication to “curriculum officers, to libraries, to families and to schools, not only in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean but also the Caribbean diaspora and the cricket fraternity globally.” Garcia said that cricket and calypso are inextricably linked to the history of colonial Great Britain, not only in TT but also in all the other islands and Guyana, where cricket is played.

It is not surprising, he said, that the book used the medium of calypso to record 90 years of cricket, with the first documented calypso being done by Atilla the Hun.

In brief comments, President Anthony Carmona said, “Calypso continues to go hand in hand with the successes and failures of our West Indies cricket team but has always been in the vanguard of giving timely support when it was required.” The Cricket World Cups that the West Indies won in 1975 and 1979, he said, are forever etched in our minds.

“Trinidad and Tobago’s very own Brian Lara, the Prince of Port-of-Spain, has had his legacy assured through the power of calypso.” Breaking the world record twice with the most runs by a Test batsman, twice at the same venue and against the same team, Carmona said, “(Lara) has found immortality in the world of calypso through Superblue’s ‘Signal to Lara’.” The global batting legend also weighed in on the book, stating in the introduction, “I hope this book will inspire our young cricketers and our young calypsonians to become the best they can be, producing more wonderful moments on the cricket field and in song for all West Indians to celebrate the only way we know how to.” West Indian cricketer and musician Dwayne Bravo’s hit song “Champion”, recorded and produced before the West Indies Under 19s, Women’s team, and the men’s team won their respective World Cup trophies in 2016, has reached international status with over 40 million hits on YouTube.

And although categorised as international pop music, Lara noted: “For all intents and purpose, we have adopted it as a soca/calypso song.

“Cricket and calypso are our region’s gifts to the world,” Lara said

Preparing meals for Lent

You may wish to keep in mind these essential points irrespective of the occasion.

Moreover, for the Lenten season “in preparation for Easter, in which some Christians participate, last for a period of 40 days beginning today and involving fasting, repentance, moderation, self-denial, and spiritual discipline. It is customary on Fridays or during the season to replace meat with fish or even a plant-based protein source. Therefore, having knowledge of the season, meal managers, chefs, or caterers should aim to serve well-balanced meals and healthy snacks that will aid persons in meeting their daily nutritional requirements. Also at mealtimes, the cook can choose to add fish and/or pulses in the preparation of tasty local cuisines; the willingness to try new recipes may be considered by some individuals.

The protein dish Serving a good source of protein together with other dishes, such as boiled ground provision, cooked vegetables, tossed salad and even legumes can be looked at as an example of a typical lunch menu.

Briefly, protein is a macronutrient needed by the body and remains essential in the diet. The main role of protein, noted to include that of: building the body – required for growth, repair and maintenance of tissues; aids in the formation of enzymes, antibodies, and hormones; regulators of fluid balance; acid-base regulators; acts as transporters; and as a secondary source of energy and glucose, during starvation or an insufficient amount of carbohydrate foods consumed over a period of time. Good sources: fish, eggs, meats, poultry, milk, cheese, yogurt, peas and beans. These foods belong to two Caribbean Food Groups: ( foods from animals, and legumes. From this you may wish to conclude that whether you choose fish or legumes to prepare your protein dishes during Lent, you will be making a great choice.

Protein is comprised of building blocks referred to as amino acids.

There are essential and non-essential amino acids, the essential amino acids must come from the diet. Foods from animals contain all of the essential amino acids and are examples of high-quality proteins. While plant sources such as peas and beans contain protein of lower quality. In order to have complete protein, you can “combine two plant foods that have different but complementary amino acid patterns.” Simply stated, complementary proteins comprise of two or more plant foods with dietary proteins complementing each other eg legumes lack the amino acids – methionine and tryptophan, whereas grains such as rice lack amino acids – isoleucine and lysine; bringing the two together you will have all of the amino acids mentioned. Examples of complementary proteins: pigeon peas pelau, kidney beans and rice, dhalpuri roti with curry channa are just a few (Whitney and Rolfes, 2011).

Sample meal plan For a balanced diet you can probably consider: breakfast – one small banana, one small bowl oats with milk, one slice bread, one bean patty, beverage (optional); lunch – three oz baked fish with gravy, two pot spoons seasoned rice, one pot spoon chunky vegetables, one small bowl tossed salad, one cup tropical fruit pieces; supper – one small bowl split pea soup with vegetables, one dinner roll, one yogurt fruit flavoured.

UNC: Govt incompetence on FATCA

Persad-Bissessar said Government’s disingenuous intention and dishonesty are ironically exposed by their own words, in a letter dated September 21, 2016, to then US Ambassador to TT John Estrada.

Persad-Bissessar said in that letter, Finance Minister Colm Imbert told Estrada, “The Government and the Opposition approved a motion to carry over the Bill in the next session of the House upon the resumption of Parliament.

The effect of this move is that the proceedings on the Bill will be resumed in the new session of Parliament due to commence on September 23, 2016.” She said Government must provide an explanation as to why they misled the country and did not agree to the establishment of the JSC at the sitting of the Parliament on September 9, 2016, when the position of the Opposition was made known.

Persad-Bissessar also said Government, “must honestly tell the country why they waited from September 2016 to January 2017 – almost four months – to establish the JSC rather than resort to blaming the Opposition for their delay and incompetence.” She boasted that the country has now seen the wisdom of the Opposition’s call for a JSC, has resulted in,” better law with improved protection and security in the best interest of the people of TT.”

Govt defends FATCA record UNC caused JSC delay

Within that chronology, the Government said the facts clearly show the delay in establishing the JSC to deal with the TIEA Bill, fell squarely on the shoulders of the Opposition. The bill is essential for TT being compliant with the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) of the United States.

According to a statement issued by the Finance Ministry, an advance copy of the original bill was sent to the Opposition on September 5, 2016.

The bill was introduced and debated in the House for the first time on September 9, 2016. When the Opposition insisted at that sitting on the establishment of a JSC to examine the legislation, the Government said the Opposition was advised that the First Session of the 11th Parliament was due to expire in two weeks and it would be practically impossible to establish the JSC under those circumstances.

When debate on the bill resumed on September 14, 2016, the Opposition again insisted on the creation of a JSC. The Government indicated that given the final stages of preparing the 2016/2017 Budget, the Parliament would have been occupied with the Budget almost to the end of last October.

Government added that it succeeded in getting an extension until September 30, 2017 for TT to be FATCA compliant.

The Government said a JSC was contemplated and in the House on December 9, 2016, Finance Minister Colm Imbert said Government was considering the establishment of that committee.

However, Government continued, the Hansard record shows that on that same day, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar was ejected from the House after getting into an argument with Speaker Bridgid Annisette- George.

Foods to treat aching joints

I know there are lots of people who suffer from arthritis and really love the Carnival fetes.

I decided to find foods that may be suitable for my body to deal with arthritis.

This arthritis is really chronic inflammation of the joints.

Looking for colourful vegetables that are rich in capsaicin, a chemical that reduce pain and inflammation.

Leafy vegetables have high quantities of antioxidant vitamins and lower levels of starch and are suited to treat inflammation.

Bell peppers and tomatoes are also recommended.

Tomatoes are plentiful and are now sold at $12 per pound.

It is rich in lycopene which has been shown to reduce inflammation in the lungs and throughout the body.

Cooked tomatoes contain even more lycopene than raw ones, so tomato sauce works.

Beets (and beetroot juice) have been shown to reduce inflammation, as well as protect against cancer and heart disease due to the vitamin C and plant pigments called betalains.

Inflammation-fighting healthy fats are also present in almond nuts and walnuts. They are rich in fibre, calcium and vitamin E.

For a quick boost one may try the spicy frozen bloody mary or peach tomato salsa.

Tomato soup which entails blending together tomato-sauce with celery, onions and green peppers. One can heat this up and enjoy with a slice of toast.

A beetroot smoothie might just be the answer to aching joints.

For this I blend one beetroot with a small piece of ginger and a sliced carrot. Add salt and ice and blend together.

Monday night mas alive in Central

Chaguanas and Carapichaima are known for having the best regional parades in Carnival and this year they kept the tradition alive with parades of traditional characters in Carnival Monday night mas.

Trouble halts Arima mas

Mayor of the Eastern Borough, Lisa Morris-Julien, who advised that it was best to bring yesterday’s revelry to a sudden halt assured that the action was for last night only and the police intends stepping up their checks when the celebrations continue today.

According to reports a man was shot in the stomach by another male reveller close to the popular night club, shopping and eating areas around Sorzano and Queen Streets.

The wounded man walked away following the incident, and police were checking hospitals, including the Arima Health facility, to see whether he sought medical attention.
Mayor Morris-Julien lamented last night that it took just a couple people to spoil the fun for so many.

“This is the first time such has happened in three years,” she observed. “But I am hoping that all will be well when we resume today.”
