Soca star Onika Bostic still ‘brain dead’
Soca sensation Onika Bostic remained clinically dead and hooked up to life support machines at the Intensive Care Unit of the Port-of-Spain General Hospital yesterday. Around 11.35 am yesterday Jacinta Bostic, mother of Onika and a close female relative were allowed by doctors to see the singer for about five minutes. When they emerged from the ICU, the emotional distress was clearly etched on the face of Onika’s mother. She told Newsday that she has not given up hope that her daughter will survive and urged citizens of the country to continue praying for a miracle. Jacinta said that while Onika remained unconscious she had not lost faith and feels a miracle will take place. The mother of three has been visiting her daughter every chance she has been given since Saturday’s accident.
Doctors at the hospital told Newsday the singer was listed as brain dead and although she underwent emergency surgery, her condition had not improved. Yesterday, strict measures were put in place to prevent the curious and concerned from swamping the ICU ward in an effort to catch a glimpse of the badly injured singing star. Bostic was injured early Saturday morning when the car in which she was a passenger, struck a wall. Several calypsonians have been praying for the recovery of their colleague and yesterday many people gathered outside the ICU hoping to get word on the condition of the singer.
