Police, press and crime

THE EDITOR: This is an open letter to all the print media in TT. We are all in concurrence with the fact that CRIME is the most pressing problem in our country.

We also agree that the Government has absolutely no plan, direction or focus in its attempt to rid the country of this scourge.

The police, being human, cannot possibly anticipate the thought processes of any human being, therefore a man can go into the Police Headquarters and shoot a police. Sure he will be held, but the individual is already dead.

How can you teach the police to anticipate when a person is about to commit a crime. What can be done is to have the police constantly on the alert and be fully aware of what is taking place.

The bandits call this, SCOPING. This applies to every other crime. The policeman has now been brainwashed into believing that he must be only be seen in a vehicle. The Commissioner is to blame for this. How does a policeman SCOPE? On his beat, he must have effective eye-contact, finger pointing, erratic body movements, serious approach, constant surveillance, following a suspect etc and not chatting, drinking, chasing females (possible decoys) etc.

The composition of the Police Service is in an abominable state, and this is a direct result of the selection process, for which they are now paying the ultimate price. There is a ten percent of police officers, whom, we all know, how and why they got selected.

These officers are stupid, coward, lazy, incompetent, serving more than protecting, spiteful, arrogant, in love with power of arrest, rude (using obscene language), involved in crime.

Enough on that score, as only amendments to the Law can correct this situation. The Guilliani plan in New York was solely based on Community Policing, where policemen were assigned permanently to certain area blocks, not specifically to arrest, but to transform the Community.

I have repeatedly maintained that whenever a plan is working, for some unknown reason it is stopped. We all know who stops it, and why, and it is definitely not the Commissioner. He acts on orders.

The salient point here is that the people, and especially the press, MUST now consider it their solemn duty to make positive contributions, so as to rid the nation of this cancer. We must not trim the tree, we must weed out the roots.

The bandit is really a coward with a gun, because when he goes to jail, he is so humble, because he is now faced with real bad men. A gun is not a toy, it is a lethal weapon, and policemen are advised not to use a gun like a bandit.

How does the press contribute? The press is the people’s forum, (this is a gigantic assignment), the people forget very quickly, and your contribution is to keep the nation constantly appraised on crimes (especial white collar) that silently slip away into oblivion. You see, Sir, the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace constantly alarmed — and hence clamorous to be led to safety — by menacing them with lies and innuendoes — all of them imaginary.

Examples of these crimes are: Ancil Savary, Bernadette James, Selwyn Richardson, the Arima hunter (Kanhai), Mala Mohammed, Glen Ashby, Akiel James, the accidental shooting of the Arouca policeman and the M$700 cocaine haul made at Monos island.

Crime is crime, and it is my belief, that at least on a monthly basis these crimes should be highlighted, so as to keep the nation aware and informed until the criminals are brought to justice. It has been said that the Law is for a few, because a few make the Law.

In my opinion, the Press should strive to uphold the truth, and suppress the false. It should scorch the wrongdoer for his wrongs, and soothe the virtuous for his righteousness, as Justice must be meted out to all.
