Houses for the bourgeois

THE EDITOR: When it comes to housing, experience shows that governments the world over seek to provide shelter for the poor and the homeless. So why has Housing Minister Rowley decided to build ‘bourge housing in the ‘bourge district of Federation Park, for ‘bourge people who are already well-off, and already have ‘bourge housing of their own? Tell us!

The cost will run into millions of dollars for the proposed townhouse-type multi-residential family units ‘of a standard equivalent to the general neighbourhood’. The public would like Rowley to say how many millions, how many units, how many carpets, etc, are planned.

We want details of how our money will be spent, lest the ‘bourge project turn out to be yet another piece of questionable expenditure, like the tsunami shelter pretending to be a sports complex; and the Farm Grove housing development at Valsayn East. This latter project has turned out to be an embarrassment for the same Ministry of Housing and the likely reason why it is being kept such a secret. Wouldn’t it be better if these millions were better spent and better managed on housing for the poor and needy in so many parts of Trinidad and Tobago?

Next matter — how much profit will government make on the ‘bourge, Federation Park housing? Is profit the aim? We didn’t know government was in the real estate business with profit in mind!

Some of the existing Federation Park residents call for the land to be used for a recreational park. Fat chance of that happening, as the existing administration has shown a distinct hatred for two things — open space, and overpasses.
