Lightning, so cops disappear
THE EDITOR: It can be justifiable argued that the Police Service has failed the country generally and in particular the burgesses of the Borough of Chaguanas. I say so because of the state of affairs regarding criminal activities at the national level and personal experience in the recent past as a resident of Chaguanas. I wish to refer particularly to the daily traffic congestion that has now become a feature in the life of the Borough. At the most critical times when the presence of police officers is required none is visible or available. A case in point was Thursday afternoon when electricity went due to severe thunderstorm and lightning. Chaguanas grounded to a halt, thanks to the lack of the presence of any police officers. The traffic lights at the Chaguanas Flyover were out of order obviously, and caused a virtual lockdown of the Borough. I made four calls to the Chaguanas Police Station, both CID and Charge Room, four calls to the Mayor’s personal phone, two calls to 999 and two calls to 800-Tips. Neither of these calls resulted in any change of the situation. The traffic remained motionless for more than an hour. Given the above, I am now calling on the Mayor of Chaguanas to act now to save the Borough because of the failure of the police. I am suggesting that he use his office to increase the number of Municipal policemen so that they will take instructions from the Borough. Have them serve the Town Centre with their presence at the peak hours, namely from 7 am to 10 am on mornings and 2 pm to 6 pm on evenings from Monday to Friday and eight hours on Saturdays. These officers will be accountable to the Office of the Mayor whose office will be responsible for the management of the resources of the Municipal Police. Chaguanas should now aspire to become the New York City of the Caribbean, beginning with proper policing of the Borough as a start. Mayor Rudi Guiliani could do it, why not Suruj Rambachan.
