Dogs find fire hydrants convenient

THE EDITOR: Here we go again! Another fire downtown PoS over the last weekend and still, no water or low water pressure in the city’s rusted fire hydrants. This should be especially embarrassing to the PM and others after a near devastating fire in PoS in April this year, and the promises made back then. The same problems still exist, with no apparent solution at hand.

When is someone in authority going to do their job and make the city safe? And most of all, when will the citizens of TT stand up and say, "We will take no more of this nonsense, we want action now!"

When will they hold someone responsible and accountable for this deplorable situation?

This inefficiency and incompetence of "big" men in high offices cannot be allowed to continue unchallenged.

Are they going to wait until someone is killed in one to these fires before they get off their duffs and do something to "fix" the fire hydrants and water problems when it comes to fighting fires in PoS and San Fernando?

Again, I reiterate that some of that wasteful "sports complex"money should be spent to upgrade the fire protection system for the country; not next year but right now. The citizens of the country cannot wait that long. They should be demanding this of their political leaders, now.

The PoS Mayor is quoted as saying that 16 new fire hydrants are on tap for the city; but if you have no water system to feed these hydrants, then all you end up with is a place for male dogs to conveniently relieve themselves on; nothing more. Is this another "spin" of the facts? Come on Mr Mayor, get real.

Again, it is good to see that Mayor Murchison Brown has joined the "political choir" and is now singing the "Concern" song. Welcome Mayor! PM Manning, National Security Minister Joseph and MP Camille Robinson needed a bass singer for the choir. Thanks for adding your rich voice to this melodious group.

Just remember people, "What is joke to many, is death to a crapaud!"

How many more millions of dollars in inventories and other property damage must occur before you do something to solve this nagging problem? How many more people must join the unemployment lines because of these fires?

This is serious business and must be taken so.

So it is time for the politicians, PM, WASA Chief, National Security Minister, Fire Chief and other technocrats to get serious and fix the water pump- ing and fire hydrant problems of the country; not next year, or 2020, but now. Time is of the essence and must not be wasted with petty politics or incompetent governance.

None of you can say that money is an object. If you have all the "oil money" at your disposal to build a $850M "tsunami shelter," then you can find the money to protect the citizens and businesses of Port-of-Spain. All that is needed is the political will and fortitude to do the right thing and a plan to put into action. So, set the right priorities and protect the people.
