Indictment against University of Manitoba
THE EDITOR: The Minister of Planning, Mrs Camille Robinson has described the Political Leader of the UNC as an ‘intellectual fraud’. This is in fact a serious indictment on the University of Manitoba, that had recognised the scholarship of Mr Dookeran by granting him an Honorary Doctorate Degree in 1991. It is also an indictment on the University of Harvard that demands his services as a visiting Lecturer. He was a Fellow at the Wheatherhead Centre for International Affairs, Harvard University. He is contributing editor to the publication The Caribbean Quest: Directions for Structural Reforms in a Global Economy published by the Institute of Latin American studies, Stockholm University. It is also an indictment on our own University, where for many years, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of the West Indies. The problems that arise in our education system have now been brought to the front by the utterances of the Minister. The PNM has little regard for intellectuals in our society. This is evident by the intellectual calibre of individuals who head some of our ministries and institutions that are falling apart. The focus of PNM’s education plan is to cater for the high failure rate in the PNM-designed Comprehensive Schools. The CEPEP and URP are but an extension of the Comprehensive School System designed by the PNM for those who have failed and those who are "drop outs" from the system. IMAAM IQBAL HYDAL Chaguanas
