Cacique evaluation terribly flawed
THE EDITOR: The Cacique Awards has long gone, but I have penned this letter because it left a sour taste in my mouth. Firstly I must congratulate all the winners of that night, but there was one winner who was not awarded that night. Let me explain, two productions were judged by the evaluation committee to be the Most Outstanding Dramatic Productions for 2004, they are ManTalk directed by Mervyn De Goeas and Catalyst directed by Beverly-Ann Chinapoo. However, it is very difficult to understand, how can two productions be awarded the Most Outstanding Dramatic Productions 2004, yet only one director was awarded in the directing category? Is this because Miss Chinapoo doesn’t belong to the Port-of-Spain Theatre Circle? Or maybe the evaluation committee views her as an upstart in the world of theatre? What makes a production the Most Outstanding Dramatic Production? The director! This brings me to another point. There is theatre happening all over the country but one can easily get the impression that it only occurs in Port-of-Spain. I have had the privilege of viewing both ManTalk and The Catalyst and the latter was a better-directed show by miles, but that, is another story. The Evaluation Committee should be ashamed and make this wrong right by awarding Miss Chinapoo the second directing award. I hope for the year 2005 the Evaluation Committee members review their evaluating process because it is terribly flawed. Miss Chinapoo, please do not be discouraged and keep up the good work and continue striving for excellence. Hope to see another production directed by you soon. MARSHA THOMPSON Lange Park Chaguanas
