Hetty Sarjeant now chairs ALTA

Former executive director of the Family Planning Association of Trinidad and Tobago, Hetty Sarjeant, has consented to be chairman of the Board of the Adult Literacy Tutors Association (ALTA).

Founder and CEO of the organisation, Paula Lucie-Smith, made the announcement at the annual general meeting which was held October 22.

At the first ALTA board meeting since taking up the appointment, Sarjeant assured fellow members that she will give priority to the organisation as she seeks to further its mission to provide free and effective literacy instruction to persons over the age of 16.

Sarjeant was most recently a representative of UNPF (United Nations Population Fund) in Jamaica, and continues to be strongly committed to supporting agencies which are involved in working towards the achievement of the Programme of Action adopted at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development and the Millennium Development Goals.

Her work has taken her as far afield as the Cook Islands and Tonga, where she provided training for board members and staff in the design and implementation of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) programmes for young people.
