We’ll keep our money

THE EDITOR: I vividly remember what I considered to be a derogatory article published more than five years ago, under the caption "Carnival is not for fat, ugly women."

This article was obnoxious to me and several of my female friends who thought it shallow and degrading, as we are avid mas players who religiously sign up each year to the band of our choice, regardless of weight or claims of beauty.

However, this year, as I view the photographs of costumes from the various major band launchings, that article from another time keeps popping up, and I can only reflect on that message which so infuriated a group of women who are now past the flush of youth. I can only hope that women of a certain age are not about to sign up to wear costumes which are specifically designed to enhance youth and a tight torso. Reflecting now on that degrading article, I have to accept that Carnival is no longer about freeing up and letting it all hang out, it is about beads, bikinis and a tight torso.

So those of us who are past our time, please let us make a decision to keep our money, as Carnival bandleaders have completely disenfranchised a whole group of women because our waistlines and our thighs are not roadworthy.
