Transport solutions underway

THE EDITOR: I have taken note of a letter in the your Sunday edition of November 13, from one of your readers from Westmoorings, by the name of Ms Charles, who proposed some changes to the traffic flow in her area, in order to reduce the volume of traffic going into Westmoorings South neighbourhood.

I wish to assure Ms Charles that I will take a close look at her suggestions, and other recommendations already made, such as an elevated road, for improving the flow of traffic in her area, so that we can fashion an appropriate solution. Work is scheduled to begin on road improvements in this general area of Diego Martin in 2006, and we can incorporate a solution to the Westmoorings problem into the overall plan. I have also seen yet another unproductive letter from Mr Lloyd Cartar in the same edition of your paper.

In this latest outburst, Mr Carter erroneously declared that the new interchange at the intersection of the Uriah Butler and Churchill-Roosevelt High-ways will not have three levels.

Within his barrage of illogical statements, he also effectively demanded that we abandon our plans for a new railway system. In the first instance, even a half-blind man could see from the outline drawing that was recently published in the Chamber of Commerce magazine that the new interchange will in fact have three levels, just like previous designs, and so Mr Cartar is wrong. Secondly, even a child in secondary school will know that the only long term solution to our traffic problems is a railway system, which would remove thousands of cars from our roads, thus permanently easing congestion.

This is why railway systems are the preferred mode of mass transit in developed countries.

Finally, contrary to the old talk being circulated by Mr Cartar and others of his ilk, construction of the first phase of the new railway system is scheduled to start in 2007, and we are well on track to achieve this deadline.
