Football match was show of ethnic unity
THE EDITOR: The recent qualifying football match for the 2006 World Cup at the Hasely Crawford Stadium was a show of racial unity. Though the majority of local players were of African descent, Indo-Trinidadians overwhelmingly supported the home team. Would the vast majority of Africans support an Indian-dominated team, group, concert, organisation, or party with the same enthusiasm? Would an all Indian team or cultural group be described as national? And why are there no Indians in the Trinidad football team? The players of the opposing Middle-Eastern Bahrain team could have easily passed as Indians by their physical appearance. Maybe the Government should adopt an affirmative action plan to recruit Indian footballers as it is doing to recruit under-represented groups in medicine and business. SALLY KHAN Arima
