Winston Dookeran ill-advised
THE EDITOR: I am a supporter of Winston Dookeran and believe Basdeo Panday should not block his becoming leader of the Opposition. Although Dookeran’s presence in the UNC so far has not led to an expansion of the party’s base or an increase in seats for the UNC (in fact UNC lost seats with Dookeran), I believe Dookeran will bring to the UNC people who ordinarily would not want anything to do with the party. However, I believe Dookeran is being ill-advised into fighting Panday and Ramesh. Dookeran should seek to unite with Panday and Ramesh rather than listen to those who tell him he can beat Panday and Ramesh. Dookeran’s advisers are the people who were responsible for the collapse of the UNC government in 2001. They advised Panday to get rid of his deputy, Attorney General Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj and we all know the disaster that followed. The same people advised Panday to call a snap election in December 2001 rather than negotiate a settlement in the dispute with Ramesh, Trevor Sudama and Ralph Maraj and the UNC lost government.
