Coach Leo Beenhakker lacking in public relations

THE EDITOR: I wonder if some Trinis may have felt insulted by coach Leo Beenhakker and his coaching staff decision not to join them in celebrating the National Soccer Team’s success thus far. After the Bahrain game, while some players risked Club fines and worst to return to TT in order to back in the afterglow, Coach Leo Beenhakker and his crew journeyed directly to Europe.

I would like to have seen Leo and his staff return to TT and be part of the airport motorcade, I would like to have seen them gleefully meeting and greeting TTFF and government officials, and interacting with the crowds who were in full force displaying their love and gratitude.

Yep, Leo and his group missed a good party and most likely will not have a chance to experience another, because that was it . . . that was TT’s official World Cup celebration.

Sure, there may be a little send off when the team departs for Europe and there may be a "Welcome Back" party when the team returns from the World Cup. But neither will have the same great warmth, intensity and emotion that the qualifying team celebration had.

Could it be that the coach and his staff had such pressing business to tend to in Europe which required them shunning their teams celebrations? I hope so, but to this distant observer it appears that this coach is no Rene Simoes when it comes to feeling at home in TT and much less adapt at fan interaction.

No doubt Leo Beenhakker is a fabulous coach, but he has much to learn in the public relations department.
