Calling Laqtel
THE EDITOR: I see mobile communicator, Laqtel has been congratulated in their deal of tower sharing with TSTT. It is the same offer that TSTT made to Digicel and they refused and quite rightly so. I have a question for Laqtel who felt it was a smart move. Are you willing to disclose to the public how much you are adding to TSTT’s coffers with the five-year deal and how much of it will be passed on to your customers?
What if after five years and the competition you are giving TSTT, forces them to put your rental fees at an exorbitant rate, what do you do then? Do you know what TSTT is planning to charge you for interconnection? Interconnection has been the biggest problem in all the Caribbean islands where Cable and Wireless is a shareholder and controls the landlines. Rates have doubled and sometimes tripled especially where relevant government agencies have refused to step in to save its citizens. Will the relevant authorities step in when the interconnection row begins to heat up? Laqtel, I feel you have played straight into the hands of your competitor, TSTT, and have somehow compromised your independence.
