Schools Carnival holidays may affect employers

THE EDITOR: The Carnival spirit is with us again and it has started to build up a frenzy.

New calypsoes are being played on some of the radio stations even though the rhythm and lyrics are the same of yesteryear.

Mas camps are buzzing with activities. Fete promoters are busy tying up loose ends for all-inclusive and other fetes. Musicians are turning nights into days to get the music right. Masqueraders are busy trying to influence colleagues, friends and families to make last minute decisions to revel with them on Carnival days.

Teachers and principals are sacrificing the education of the majority to satisfy the whims and fancy of a few. I am also sure that the Education Ministry officials are busy trying to get it right to give schools the Carnival week off yet again. That was done and will be done again because the ninth week of the August holidays was used to balance it off.

Traditionally, parents budget their vacation leave to be with their young ones when schools are on vacation. Many parents use their sick and casual leaves to be at home when schools have unplanned holidays.

So, for this Carnival nobody should find parents wicked for taking the Carnival week as vacation, sick or casual leave to be with their loved ones.
