How to stop kidnappings

THE EDITOR: Despite all the talk and legislation there seems to be no end to the spate of kidnappings which this country has seen. However, from my research I have realised that the solutions are all too commonsensical and staring us all in the face.

Primarily, a No Ransom Law has no effect in a society such as Trinidad’s. Such a law will in fact infuriate kidnappers and lead to more murders of kidnap victims. In any extent, kidnapping and personally, those providing information to kidnappers should be, by law, punishable by no bail and life imprisonment. In the event that such a law as No Ransom is passed kidnappers may opt for non-monetary means. Making the No Ransom Law worthless.

Businessmen and those well-to-do should always travel in an escort of vehicles which should act as a deterrent. Occasional checks in the side and rear view mirrors should greatly assist in detecting any strange activities. Employers should take an iron fist approach in employing workers especially to avoid having incidents where employees assist and in fact execute kidnappings. Employers should thoroughly check the backgrounds of all potential job candidates and thoroughly question them in the interview.

Banks and other financial institutions should not make sensitive client information available for a lapse in such client security can give way to company employees obtaining information and distributing to the criminal element.

In closing, the following practice I am about to mention should not be overlooked and in fact should be followed by all citizens. Shred, tear or even burn all sensitive personal documents for cases of identity theft and kidnappings have been known to occur in other nations through the victim’s negligence of his/her personal documents. Whether it be bank and/or credit card statements, I implore you to take this precaution and most importantly, don’t give your mouth liberty about your or others personal finances.
