Integrity standing on its head
THE EDITOR: In his uncontrollable urge for publicity, San Juan/Barataria Member of Parliament Dr Fuad Khan called on his colleagues in Parliament to put "integrity in public life first" in the new year. I would have rolled with laughter if I did not believe that Dr Khan should take his own advice. Dr Khan’s appeal would have been significant if he had exercised some measure of integrity by resigning his seat in Parliament and seek a fresh mandate from his constituents after he broke with Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday and the United National Congress (UNC) last year. He had declared himself an independent UNC. There is no such thing as an independent UNC. Dr Khan cannot talk about putting "integrity in public life first" when he sits in Parliament on the political and electoral strength of Basdeo Panday. Integrity in public life demands that he enters Parliament on his own political strength and not that of Mr Panday and the UNC. I really hope he was sending that message to himself, his colleagues, Pointe-a-Pierre MP Gillian Lucky and St Joseph MP Gerald Yetming. As long as Dr Khan, Ms Lucky and Mr Yetming sit in Parliament removed from the Opposition UNC whip they are making "integrity in public life first" stand on its head and they, collectively constitute a poor example of responsible behaviour.
