Stop this terrible stadium noise
THE EDITOR: Hopefully and thankfully, can you publish this letter so that perhaps someone may be able to help? Woodbrook residents were forced to ‘listen’ to the guttural screaming and shouting emanating from the Kanye West concert held at the National Stadium on Thursday December 22, 2005. Now I’ve observed Iwer George’s face beaming proudly from the papers boasting that he is responsible for something called ‘Broadway, to be inflicted on Woodbrook 25 times between January 1 and the end of February 2005. Woodbrook is not a ‘new’ area; the homes have been there for decades and many are still occupied by their original owners, existing side by side with second and third generations of their families. This will tell you that many of these residents are elderly. Who are the inconsiderate persons or faceless, nameless bodies who gave permission for this intrusion of bawling and yelling noise to be inflicted on residents? During the West event, all that we heard for the entire night was screaming, shouting and heavy bass pounding throughout Woodbrook. New Year’s night it was a repeat performance with either a female or male shouter, bawling and yelling into the microphone. It is hard to tell the gender of the screamer as the speakers are so very loud that it comes across as distorted noise. The police say they "can’t do anything about the noise, talk to the EMA." The EMA? Where do they hang out at fete time? At the fete? So much old talk about "these criminals" and stop crime and lawlessness", it wouldn‘t come to anything when you consider that crime has its genesis in such selfish and uncaring acts and the very thought of giving permission for such events, is in itself reason for jail. All of us love Carnival and yes, indeed, like going to fetes, but oh gosh, have a heart! Since the almighty dollar is the controlling factor in this, my prayer is that each such ‘event’ will be a great monetary loss to the promoter/s and that other persons will also get permission to hold such nauseating events very near to the homes of these promoters and organisers and governing bodies, then they can see how they like earbell splitting noise, mounds of litter (never cleaned up but left to blow and blow everywhere) hordes of cussing people and packs of urinators all around them — 25 times in two months! Please turn down the noise — it cannot be called ‘music,’ because as the performers seem to have no melody to call their own, they prefer to shout out all the tired chants, such as ‘move,’ ‘wave,’ ‘scream’ ‘big up,’ ‘all yuh tired?’ all yuh feeling good?’ Or ‘songs’ with one word — this year we’re sticking with the verbs — ‘excite’ and the never ending ‘jump’, etc etc. Can anyone in authority possibly help Woodbrook?
