Announcement in poor taste
THE EDITOR: It is with great dismay and total disappointment that I write this letter. On Wednesday January 25, an article was carried in a daily newspaper of our dear "Miss Universe," Wendy Fitzwilliam’s visit to the Corpus Christi College in Diego Martin, where, during her talk to the students there she disclosed that she was pregnant, but not married. Now I have no problem with what Ms Fitzwilliam chooses to do with her private life, but I have a big problem with what knowledge she imparts to our young children, whose minds are sometimes shaky, trying to determine what is right from wrong, and certainly not being helped by all that is going on around them at this time in our beloved country. Ms Fitzwilliam I think that you were totally wrong when you said it was "the right environment to make this announcement." It was done in poor taste and to the wrong audience; not to mention at a "Catholic" girls school, where morals and values should be stressed at all times. You went on to say to the students that "marriage should come first," but that is not good enough, because you were speaking to children from all walks of life; some might be able to pull through without any blemish, but others will not, and with very severe consequences. Ms Fitzwilliam always remember you are supposed to be a role model, so be careful what you say to our young children; they are very easily led the wrong way. The irony of it all is that the theme of your talks is "The Guardian in Education Making a Difference" series. JOY PIERRE Woodbrook
