Judges favour Chynee at Synergy Soca Stars

The Synergy Soca Star finals took place on the open grounds of the Jean Pierre Complex on Thursday.

The crowd at the complex was phenomenal and the competition was stiff.

But from early on it was clear the night belonged to Chynee, whose own composition — Wanna Be Like — was a tremendous crowd-pleaser.

Chynee, dressed like a character from a video game — his colours red, gold and black — commanded the stage like a professional soca artiste. He was full of confidence, inviting the crowd to follow his lead as he had the audience synchronised during his act.

Accompanying him were dancers also dressed in oriental wear. Each performer sang two songs — a choice of an old soca tune backed up by the original artistes, as well as their own compositions.

Chynee chose to team up with KMC for his popular hit “Carnival Bashment” and also performed his own composition and at the end, walked away with the grand prize of a Daihatsu Terios and a $30,000 endorsement deal, courtesy bmobile.

He told Newsday after his win that he was now “sucked in” to the soca industry and plans to represent himself and the genre to the best of his ability.

“It’s a great feeling to know that I had a lot of support behind me and they helped me to win. On the night of the finals, I just felt the energy from the crowd and it was great; I just went with the flow,” he said.

“The other contestants had some good performances too. They went out there and gave their best and so did I,” he added. Chynee said he already has a tight schedule and plans to do a lot of work with a variety of producers.

Here are the results:

1st place – Chynee (Richard Valentine)

4th place – Ayanna (Ayanna La Borde)
