UNC groups back Kamla

Yesterday, chairman of the UNC Oropouche East constituency executive, Alfie Subiah, told Newsday a meeting with the council is expected to be called soon to determine the general consensus.

“We have not met as yet, but I will be meeting with the secretary to schedule a meeting so we can get the views of the council.

“After this is done we would be advising our MP, Roodal Moonilal, on whether he should endorse Persad-Bissessar as Opposition Leader.”

Asked what views the membership have been expressing Subiah said, “the majority of them are supporting Kamla.”

On Thursday a letter was sent to Caroni East MP Tim Gopeesingh urging him to throw his support behind Persad-Bissessar.

The letter signed by Dr Anil Ramnanan on behalf of the entire constituency executive stated that “it is clear from the result that the membership from Caroni East has voted resoundingly for Kamla Persad-Bissessar as our new political leader.

“We are of the belief that she would need to lead a new parliamentary agenda to fulfill the objectives outlined in the campaign. As a result we call upon you as our member of Parliament to lend your vote for her to become Leader of the Opposition.”

Attempts to reach the chairman of the Couva South constituency, Ken Ramnarine, proved futile as Newsday was told he accompanied MP Kelvin Ramnath to Parliament.
