Kamla now Commonwealth Chair

The position she has inherited from former prime minister Patrick Manning following the nation’s hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November, 2009.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Royal Commonwealth Society congratulated Persad-Bissessar on her appointment as Prime Minister and also praised the conduct of her election campaign.

“As the local Representative in Trinidad and Tobago, the Society extends congratulations to you and your Government for the unprecedented victory at the recent polls, particularly, the Democratic conduct of the manner of campaigning and polling itself,” attorney Bindra Dolsingh said.

Dolsingh, counsel and regional representative for the Royal Commonwealth Society, London, England, noted the Society’s readiness to work together with the new government in achieving the aims of the Commonwealth.

“At the same time, I offer my services in appropriate quarters as you may deem necessary by further communication and discussion,” he said.

He added: “It is incumbent on me as it’s representative to be informed of activities, especially of a Commonwealth broad-based nature. This will provide expanded information to be communicated throughout the Commonwealth as shown in the latest Magazine.”

The Royal Commonwealth Society is the forerunner in all aspects of Commonwealth affairs (in conjunction with the Commonwealth Secretariat) in London, England.
