Notre Dame claim Men Open Indoor Hockey title

It was the club’s second title of the day as they retained their U-21 Men division earlier in the day.

Their win over the defending champions came as a result of a double each from Shaquille Daniel, Aidan De Gannes and Darnil Trancoso, while Chad Jose Pedro got the other item. Coincidently these were the same players who starred in the U-21 division helping them defend their crown.

Daniel who scored the most goals in both the U-21 and Men’s Open divisions opened the scoring from a field seconds after the first whistle to make it 1-0.

Two minutes later Pedro doubled the advantage from another field goal. The defending champions got their first item in the 11th minute from a Steffon Sandiford field goal, before Sheldon Mc Keller equalised in the 18th minute from a penalty corner as the teams went into the break locked at 2-2. Paragon too the lead a minute into the second half compliments of a Syl Sinnette field goal, but the Dames men came back two minutes later as Daniel slotted in another field goal to make it 3-3.

Cogie Butler sent the defending champs back into the lead in the 24th minute from another field goal, but De Gannes equalized with his first a minute later making it 4-4.

Trancoso then gave Notre Dame a 5-4 lead from a field goal in the 31st, before adding his second two minutes later to make it 6-4. De Gannes completed his double in the 35th minute from a field goal, but Sinnette gave the defending champions some hope cutting the deficit to 7-5 seconds later.

However, that was as far as they got as Notre Dame held on at the end to come away with the win and the title.

Meanwhile Shandy Carib Mags dethroned GCC of Guyana with a 2-1 win in the final of the U-21 women division.

National senior player Brianna Govia registered the most goals in the division, gave the Shandy Carib team the lead in the third minute from a field goal.

The host held their advantage until the 29th minute before Ashley De Groot gave the defending champions some hope as she slotted home from a penalty corner.

However, it was not to be their evening, as Kelly Marie Young responded seconds later from a field goal to put the icing on the cake making it 2-1.
