Police await report on ‘death car’
A senior police officer told Newsday, “The car was only recently inspected and we now await a report from the Inspector of Motor Vehicles.”
On June 9, twin sisters Khadijah and Khertima Taylor, 18, Teenisha Garcia, 18, Upper Six students of St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando, former schoolmate Kafiya Gill,19, Akinton Derrick, 21, were returning to their homes from a nightclub when the car driven by David Balkissoon, 20, veered off the road and crashed in the Cipero Bridge, San Fernando. The Taylor girls died on the spot while Gill later succumbed to her injuries at San Fernando General Hospital. Garcia, Derrick and Balkissoon sustained serious injuries and were treated and warded.
Balkissoon has since been discharged and is now at his home at Concorde Road, Pointe-a- Pierre. Garcia and Derrick remain warded.
Two Mondays ago, police recorded a statement from Balkissoon on what happened on the night the girls perished. Garcia and Derrick were also interviewed, however police said there are still more interviews to be conducted with the survivors.
The officer said, “We are still to visit the accident site with the driver but that has not yet been done because of his injuries.”
Speaking to Newsday yesterday, Garcia’s father, Curtis said his daughter who received injuries to her pelvis is recovering slowly.
“She is coming along nicely,” he said. “We don’t know yet when she will be discharged.”
