Greer Angelica Iton vies for Miss Asia Pacific title

Greer Angelica Iton is preparing to enter the Miss Asia Pacific World Super Talent Pageant 2013 in Korea in October this year.

The beauty, a former Miss Trinidad and Tobago contestant, model and dancer, is a medical doctor, employed at the Ophthalmology Unit of the Department of Surgery at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope.

Greer was chosen for the competition, which will be held in Seoul from October 15-31, by Venessa Sahatoo the national franchise director and president of Oneness Entertainment TT, producers of the Miss Oneness TT Beauty Pageant of San Fernando.

According to Sahatoo, the Miss Asia Pacific pageant incorporates contests in beauty and talent. “This show provides a platform for producers and promoters as they search for global stars be it film stars, models, singers and dancers,” Sahato said.

Greer, she said, is an ideal candidate for this show as she is talented and educated. She noted that Greer is passionate about representing her country. “She is a well balanced young woman who is a great role model, hence the reason she was chosen as the final Miss Oneness 2013. Greer will follow in the footsteps of her fellow representatives in beauty pageants (such) as Renee Bhagwandeen, Sheriza Ali and Soowan Bramble, who were winners in international competitions.”

Greer started dancing at the age of three years and has danced with the Caribbean School of Dance, under the tutorship of Carol La Chapelle and also with the Metamorphosis Dance Company. She completed up to Grade 8 in ballet examinations at the Royal Academy of Dance with a distinction.

She also studied modern, jazz and tap dancing while at these institutions.

She also played the piano through primary school and the switched to playing the violin in which she also reached up to Grade 8. She played with both the well-known St Augustine Chamber Orchestra as well as the then National Youth Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago. Among her many distinctions, Greer placed in the top 100 students in the Common Entrance Examination in 1997 with the 12th highest mark in the country. She also received a dance scholarship for the Summer dance programme at Ballet Hispanico in New York City, New York in 2001. She was the valedictorian of the class of 2002 at St Joseph’s Convent. She began medical school at UWI, Mona, Jamaica in 2004. She was the sports and culture representative on UWI Medical Students Association 2005-2006 and became the vice-president of external affairs on Jamaica Medical Students Association 2006-2007. She was the host on Caribbean Passport broadcast around the Caribbean and the Face of J Angelique Clothing Line in Jamaica and the Caribbean.

In addition to these major academic accomplishments, this charming young woman is also well travelled, having visited China, Japan, Egypt, the former Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, France, UK and the USA.

Greer loves to music, dancing, travelling, shopping, and modelling. She also looks forward to Carnival and enjoys all aspects of this local festival.

Sahatoo says the Miss Asia Pacific has ventured into the diversified fields of film production, television software development, advertisement films, music videos and celebrity management. The top 15 delegates of the pageant will appear as main models of Maxim 2014 edition. Maxim is an international men’s magazine based in the United Kingdom, and known for its pictorials featuring popular actresses, singers, and female models such as Paris Hilton, Jessica Alba, Alyssa Milano, Cameron Diaz, Tyra Banks, Monica Bellucci, Cindy Crawford, Jessica Gomes, Dia Mirza, Sushmita Sen. Diana Starkova, a former winner of the Miss Asia Pacific pageant, was invited to the Cannes International Film Festival and has landed a leading role in a new movie about the assassinated former leader of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto.

The finals of the Miss Asia Pacific World Super Talent Pageant 2013 takes place at the Grand Ballroom of 63 City Tower Building Seoul, Korea on October 30.
