Prisoner found with ‘Rambo’ knife

Just how the knife and phones got into the prison is the subject of an internal investigation which is ongoing. According to a prison source, on Thursday last, a party of prisons officers acting on a tip-off, searched several prisoners.

During the search, a prisoner was found with three cellular phones, chargers for the phones and the knife which was made famous in the Rambo movies of the 1980s starring Sylvester Stallone. One side of the blade is razor sharp while the other is serrated, like a saw.

The prisoner, who was classified as an ordinary prisoner, was immediately transferred to the Maximum Security Prison because of the seriousness of the offence. Subsequent to the incident, Prisons Officers Association President, Rajkumar Ramroop questioned the security and scanning process at the prisons saying, “This incident raises concerns about security at the nations’ prisons. Where did the cellphones come from? What about the scanning process?” he asked.

Ramroop called on the relevant authorities to ensure proper security measures are taken on a daily basis and also called for the continued “weeding out of rogue officers in the system”.

And in an unrelated incident, investigations are ongoing into the beating, chopping and robbery of a 65-year-old businessman on Friday. The victim’s licenced Taurus .380 pistol along with 13 rounds of ammunition were stolen.

Police subsequently detained a 19-year-old man from Santa Cruz for questioning in connection with the incident.

According to a police report, at about 6.30 pm, businessman Bruce McIndoe had just arrived at his home at Homestead Gardens, Santa Cruz when he was accosted by three masked men armed with cutlasses, who announced a hold-up. The men, police said, proceeded to beat and chop the businessman.

McIndoe was subsequently relieved of his licenced Taurus .380 pistol along with 13 rounds of ammunition, jewelry and cash. The men then escaped in a waiting vehicle. Police officers from the North Eastern Task Force were called in and conducted searches in the Santa Cruz area.

Members of the public who may have any information on this incident are asked to contact the Santa Cruz Police Station at 676-8888 or Cpl Samuel of the North Eastern Division Task Force at 683-9294.
