The importance of introspection
Introspection provides us with this golden opportunity whereby we can observe the operations of our inner self, and in so doing, discover how our minds are regulated. Simply put, it involves an informal examination of our internal thoughts and feelings, which is also a process of reflection of our emotions.
Introspection also describes a research technique first coined by one of the founding fathers of Psychology, Wilhelm Wundt. Wundt’s technique involved training people to be as objective as they possibly can in the analysis of their thoughts.
Looking inward provides a pathway to better understand one’s behavioural characteristics which may be influenced by a myriad of circumstances including environmental or generational. It’s a process that can assist in strengthening your opinions and/ or beliefs regarding various issues.
Introspection presents wide ranging benefits which all redound to a more solid life.
Firstly, it is driven by conscience and consciousness that allows you to rest better and be free from both internal and external blame; one also develops a greater sense of awareness that permits you to be true to both yourself and others.
You are also able to build character as you are driven to challenge the real you — the positives, negatives, weaknesses, strengths coupled with your own realities about life. Keep in mind that you alone are responsible for your thoughts and actions, failure and successes.
Introspecting allows you to define and measure varying levels of happiness, as well as relationships.
In an effort to identify that most desired peace within, you must know yourself.
Life is worth living when you’re able to find that inner happiness.
Your ability to confront fear, challenges, grief and pain, becomes stronger with introspection.
Because you know yourself, you essentially become fearless rather than being fearful.
You are also able to make more informed decisions, because knowing yourself is an automatic ticket to increased self-confidence.
Acceptance of choices is also an easier task as your level of awareness and self-empowerment is maximised. Your authencity as an individual is now real! Introspection provides a unique clarity, focus and rationality about who we really are, and so, provides a better fit in our social space.
