Call for unity is good for the country
THE EDITOR: Mr Dookeran has made a most stirring speech, if his words are to be believed. This appeal as he puts it "in this time of crisis" for all leaders "to unite and put their differences aside" is most timely, and if accepted for its word value, really appropriate. There is an immediate need for the leaders to unite and present a common, insurmountable front to the problems that affect us: crime. I take it that Mr Dookeran is suggesting that he is the kind of leader who will unite, in this time of crisis, with the leader of this country, to come to grips with the problem of crime in this country and to restore this country as a beautiful place to live. In this nation the list of unsolved murders is very high. We have I am sure, over two hundred unsolved murder cases for this year already and when added to the list of unresolved murders over the last three years I am sure we are about 300-400. We can recall the case of Akiel Chambers whose body was found in a swimming pool, the strange case of the boy from South whose body was not found and whose case must be called a kidnapping. Then there is the case of our former AG Selwyn Richardson whose buddy, the COP Bernard, promised that no stone would be left unturned in the relentless search for his killers. We can go on and on. Panday, inspite of murder hitting close to home when his colleague’s son was callously killed, got another wake up call recently when the same colleague lost his aunt in another brutal, heartless murder. When will this stop? Certainly if ever the time for putting your heads together and working at some measure to check this wanton killing is now! There is the matter of kidnapping whose planning and execution seems to betray a fair amount of thought. Surely the police can and must do better than throw their hands up and say we can’t cope! It is exasperating to see all this crime proliferating and the law enforcement officers doing nothing to keep up their end of the motto — "To protect and serve". It is now late in the day, but better late than never for Mr Dookeran to put his cards on the table and act it in a manner that is "responsive to both the short term and long term needs" of all the people of TT. Come together with all the MPs and come up with something to solve the problems — NOW! GEORGE DAMIEN Arima
