Death March made a poignant statement

THE EDITOR: Saturday October 22, 2005, a "red letter" day here in Trinidad and Tobago. Thousands of citizens took to the streets of downtown Port-of-Spain in a "solidarity" march dubbed the "Death March" organised by the Keith Noel #136 Committee. From all reports, that is viewing on television and reading the newspaper reports, the march was a success.

Trinidadians of all races, colours and creeds came out to express enough is enough! Signs, paintings, placards, T-shirts, all said the same thing "Crime is the issue, deal with it!" Opposition Members of Parliament, and the senate businessmen, concerned citizens, trade unionists, men and women who have "victims" of crime and criminal activity, ordinary people, housewives, mothers who have wept and lost children, loved ones. Anoted absenteeism was the members of government, the ruling party, who had indicated not to support the Death March, how sad!

From my vantage point sitting in my living room, I was impressed by what I witnessed.

Although I did not attend the march, my heart and mind was united with all concerned. For citizens crime has affected us all citizens directly or indirectly.

As for me personally a friend of mine has been a victim of crime, this friend is just an ordinary citizen going about his legitimate business his experience was he had just left an ATM machine just outside West Port-of-Spain, he heard a voice call out to him, when he turned around a young man stuck a pointed instrument into his neck and demanded all his cash, at first he resisted, as he resisted the young man pierced the instrument deeper into his skin, "ah eh fraid to kill ya, yu know dat", out of fear he eventually handed over the cash, he reported the matter to the police soon after, but nothing came out of the incident. So this is the level of criminal activity the nation has sunken into, criminals running wild. Thousands of citizens making a public statement, thank you Trinidad and Tobago.
